About the metro Detroit distillery

Metro Detroit distillery  has a long whiskey-making history, dating back to the days of Prohibition. But today, the city’s distillers are creating spirits that are as unique as they are delicious.

Among them is Detroit City Distillery, which recently won three double-gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Their Homegrown Rye, which won two of those awards, is grown right here in Michigan.

Tucked behind Eastern Market, this artisanal distillery packs big flavors into their small-batch whiskies. Try their rye neat or in the cinnamon toast-reminiscent “Long Arm of the Law” cocktail, which pairs the homegrown rye with fig preserves, cinnamon and lemon.

They also bottle their own vodka, gin, rum, and fruit brandies. Owner Rogers says he will make everything he can using as many Michigan products as possible.

He plans to launch a martini bar later this fall, where he’ll serve drinks made with the spirits he’s distilling. But he’s not ready to distribute his whiskey yet, as it’s still in the process of being licensed.

The distillery, which opened in 2014 in Eastern Market, moved to a former Stroh’s ice cream plant this year. It took them a year to convert the building, but they’re open for tours starting Thursday.

Bees in the D Honey Bourbon

The distillery, in partnership with local nonprofit Bees in the D, released a limited edition honey bourbon this month. All proceeds will go to support the organization’s work, which includes supporting local bee colonies and pollinators.
